Choosing a teacher training - an unqualified opinion

Here we are - 2024 - I'm busy with a new job, I've gained two stone I'm trying to lose and I still ache to become a yoga teacher more than anything. So here are my ponderings so far!

Things I've considered - and will report back if it's any good:

Class size

Less than 20 trainees in the cohort so there is space for community and getting to know the teachers

Experienced YTT lead teacher

I would like the lead teacher to have lead other YTTs before - just to know I'm in safe hands and someone who may have ironed out their approach to teach trainees

NOT immersive

I think immersive programmes are great for some people - but I would like plenty of time between meets to read the books, try teaching on my friends etc. - which simply isn't possible on a one month immersive. Also - it sounds really sad being in a glorious sunny country and you don't have any time off.

Recognised but not large chain studio

My main reference here will be London - if you are in a YTT for triyoga or MoreYoga, you will be one of many. This may mean that the approach is great, but you will likely get a very generic vinyasa-heavy YTT and not have a major unique selling point when you graduate.

In-person anatomy section

Outsourcing the anatomy section to online I think risks you not being able to absorb as much information or be able to ask questions live as and when they arise. Anatomy is very physical and being able to see demonstration will make a big difference!

Bonus points:

  • Recognisable staff - whether that is former teachers of mine, yogi "superstars" or authors of key textbooks

  • Electives or specialisations - makes you stand out more (I hope!)

From what I have seen, my preferred way of learning would be a "kick start" immersion for one or two weeks - and then have the remainder spread out over a weekend a month.

I'm so lucky to be in a large city where it's paralysis of choice rather than lack of options that's holding me back !

Anyways - I will keep you all updated as I make my final decision
